Lunar Mansion Calculator: Why Birth Time and Location Matter
Learn why an accurate lunar mansion calculator needs birth time, location, and Moon position instead of a date-only lookup.
Your birth date gives a day; your birth time gives the Moon a place within that day. For DivePast’s current mapping, a recognized birthplace also helps resolve the time-zone context of the recorded clock time. Together, those details make the starting moment clearer. They do not turn a symbolic reading into a proven fact.
DivePast uses aa-js to estimate the Moon’s geocentric position at the resolved instant, then maps that value through its current lunar-mansion table. The interpretation layer that follows is original editorial reflection, not medical, legal, financial, or deterministic advice.
What each input contributes

The Moon moves quickly. That is why a date-only lookup can be a useful orientation but cannot carry the same confidence as a well-recorded birth moment.
What “location” means in the current calculator
In the current implementation, birthplace is used to interpret the local clock time in the appropriate time zone when a supported city is available. The Moon-position calculation is geocentric, meaning it is referenced to Earth’s centre. DivePast does not presently claim a topocentric observer correction from your exact latitude and longitude.
This is a useful boundary to know when comparing calculators. Two tools may differ because they resolve time zones differently, use a different mapping table, or work from a different lunar-station tradition.
Why birth time matters near a boundary
A boundary case occurs when the Moon’s modelled position is close to the edge between two entries in the DivePast table. A rounded or missing birth time can then change the application label. The responsible practice is not to choose the more flattering description; it is to keep both possibilities in view.
Use this check:
1. Confirm whether the recorded time is exact, rounded, or remembered later.
2. Recalculate with the earliest and latest plausible time if the record is uncertain.
3. Read both adjacent mansion notes if the range crosses a boundary.
4. Treat the reflection as an invitation to observe, not a verdict to obey.
Why calculators can disagree
“Lunar mansion” can refer to different traditions. Chinese Twenty-Eight Mansions, Arabic manzils, and Vedic nakshatras have distinct reference frames, ordering, and interpretive histories. Even within one family, a date-only table and a time-aware mapping can use different assumptions.

FAQ
Is the result exact if I only know my birth date?
No. A date-only or noon-fallback result is useful for orientation, but it remains approximate until the birth time and time-zone context are better established.
Can my birth lunar mansion change?

Why does DivePast ask for a location?
It helps resolve the local time-zone context of a recorded birth time. The current Moon-position model is geocentric; it does not claim that your latitude and longitude are being used as a topocentric astronomical correction.
