What Are the 28 Lunar Mansions? Meaning and Complete Guide
Learn what the 28 Lunar Mansions mean, how the Chinese lunar mansion system maps the Moon, and how your mansion becomes a Soul Echo coordinate.
The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions (二十八宿, Èrshíbā Xiù) are a traditional Chinese astronomical framework for following the Moon’s movement against a sequence of named stellar stations. They are a beautiful place to begin if you are drawn to lunar timing, symbolic study, or the older skies of East Asia. They are not a personality test, and they do not require you to believe that a birth chart has written your fate.
At DivePast, the Mansions are used as the historical inspiration for an astronomy-informed mapping and a reflective reading practice. That distinction matters: historical astronomy, a modern computational mapping, and a personal interpretation are related, but they are not interchangeable claims.
The historical idea: lunar stations, not equal modern sectors
The Moon moves through the sky quickly, passing a new stretch of stellar background on successive nights. Chinese astronomers organized this path through twenty-eight named mansions, traditionally arranged in four groups of seven. The Palace Museum of China’s overview is a useful introduction to the system and its order.
It is tempting to turn the twenty-eight names into twenty-eight equal slices of a modern 360-degree circle. That is a teaching shortcut, not a reliable description of every historical convention. Historical treatments use determinative stars and coordinate practices of their own; mansion widths vary rather than forming one universal equal-degree table. See this scholarly overview of differing mansion sizes and this IAU/Cambridge discussion of the traditional equatorial frame.
The Four Symbols
The twenty-eight mansions are commonly grouped into four celestial regions:
| Group | Direction | Mansions |
|---|---|---|
| Azure Dragon (青龙) | East | Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, Ji |
| Black Tortoise (玄武) | North | Dou, Niu, Nv, Xu, Wei, Shi, Bi |
| White Tiger (白虎) | West | Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zi, Shen |
| Vermilion Bird (朱雀) | South | Jing, Gui, Liu, Xing, Zhang, Yi, Zhen |
The names and fourfold structure belong to the historical framework. DivePast’s language of emergence, shelter, discernment, or expression is an original editorial way of reflecting with those patterns. It is offered as a lens, not as a recovered statement of what an ancient observer believed about your life.
How DivePast uses the Mansions
DivePast starts with a recorded birth date and time. When a recognized birthplace is supplied, it helps resolve the time-zone context of that record. The current calculator then uses the aa-js astronomical library to estimate the Moon’s geocentric position at that moment, converts the relevant value to right ascension, and maps it through a DivePast application table.
The result is DivePast’s astronomy-informed lunar-mansion mapping. It is not presented as a reconstruction of one historical Chinese coordinate table, an observatory ephemeris, or proof of a fixed spiritual identity. The paired moon phase and the reflection prompts are original DivePast material for contemplation.
Birth time matters most when a modeled result sits near a mapping boundary. If the time is unknown, the calculator uses a noon fallback; that is a clear convenience, not hidden certainty. For the method in full, read How to Calculate Your Lunar Mansion.
28 Lunar Mansions and the 12 Zodiac answer different questions
The Twenty-Eight Mansions and the twelve signs are not interchangeable labels. The former is a Chinese lunar-station tradition; “the zodiac” describes several astrological traditions and chart practices, often centred on signs, planets, seasons, or other chart factors. Neither system needs to be reduced to a shallow personality label, and neither has to cancel the other.
At DivePast, you might use a moon mansion to notice a recurring pattern of attention, then use a moon phase to consider its timing. The useful question is not “what must I become?” but “what am I seeing more clearly, and what can I test in ordinary life?”
Read 28 Mansions vs. 12 Zodiac for a careful comparison, or Chinese 28 Lunar Mansions vs. Arabic Manzils vs. Vedic Nakshatras before comparing calculators across traditions.
A responsible way to work with a result
Use a mansion result as a starting point:
1. Check whether your birth time is exact, rounded, or unknown.
2. Notice any boundary warning rather than forcing a single label.
3. Read the historical context and the DivePast reflection as separate layers.
4. Keep the part that gives you a useful question or practice; set aside the rest.
That is enough. The older sky is already intricate without pretending it can settle every modern question.
