How to Calculate Your Lunar Mansion by Birth Date and Moon Position
Learn how to calculate your lunar mansion from birth date, birth time, location, and Moon position using the astronomical Degree Method.
To calculate a lunar mansion responsibly, start with a birth moment, name the coordinate convention being used, and keep astronomical computation separate from symbolic interpretation. A quick label without those boundaries may look precise while hiding its assumptions.
DivePast offers one transparent approach. It is an astronomy-informed application mapping, not a claim to reproduce every historical Chinese mansion table.
The short answer
The current DivePast calculator:
1. Reads the birth date and recorded birth time.
2. Uses a recognized birthplace, when supplied, to resolve the local time-zone context.
3. Uses aa-js to estimate the Moon’s geocentric position for that moment.
4. Converts the relevant position to right ascension and maps it through a DivePast boundary table.
5. Calculates a birth moon phase from the Sun-Moon angle, then offers an original symbolic reflection.
This produces DivePast’s astronomy-informed lunar-mansion mapping. It is not an observatory ephemeris, a topocentric calculation from your exact latitude and longitude, or a certified reconstruction of a single historical coordinate system.

The Moon moves quickly enough that a rounded birth time can matter near a boundary. This is not a flaw in a reading; it is a reason to state uncertainty honestly.
What the calculation does, step by step
1. Resolve the birth moment
A date alone is not a moment. DivePast combines the date with the recorded time and, where a supported birthplace is known, the relevant time zone. If no time is known, noon is used as a visible fallback. It is a convenience for exploration, not a recovered fact.
2. Estimate the Moon’s geocentric position
The calculator uses the aa-js astronomical library to model the Moon and Sun for the resolved instant. “Geocentric” means the calculation is referenced to Earth’s centre. The current model does not claim to apply a small observer-specific topocentric shift from the user’s latitude and longitude.
3. Apply the DivePast mapping table
The modelled lunar position is converted to right ascension and placed into a current DivePast table of mansion boundaries. That table is an application convention. Historical Chinese lunar-mansion sources use their own determinative stars, periods, and coordinate practices, so this step should not be described as an exact reproduction of all traditional methods.
4. Add the moon-phase layer
DivePast also calculates the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon to place the result in one of eight broad moon-phase windows. The mansion is a placement layer; the moon phase is a timing layer. The interpretation that follows is original editorial reflection.
Why two calculators can disagree
Two tools can give different labels without either one being broken. They may use different traditions, coordinate frames, boundary tables, time-zone handling, or date-only shortcuts. Chinese Twenty-Eight Mansions, Arabic manzils, and Vedic nakshatras are related fields of study, not interchangeable labels.

How to use a result without overclaiming it
If the result is far from a boundary and the birth record is reliable, you can treat it as a stable starting point for exploration. If the time is rounded, missing, or close to a boundary, read the adjacent possibilities too. A good symbolic practice makes room for the quality of the evidence.
The result can be interesting without being absolute. Use it to frame a question, notice a recurring pattern, or guide further reading. Do not use it as medical, legal, financial, or deterministic advice.
